His undergraduate medical training was at St Andrews and Manchester (1980) and his orthopaedic training was in the North West Deanery.
During this time, he was awarded an MD (1989), as the MRC Research Fellow.
As a Senior Registrar, he undertook Fellowships in Switzerland and Seattle to study with world experts. In addition, he is an active member of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society as a member of its Scientific Committee from 2004 – 2006 and Honorary Secretary from 2006 – 2009. He also continues to be an Examiner for the FRCS Orth.
